Before I started my trip, I bought a 500$ small camera to have with me as I try to capture this vast world through a tiny sensor.

Little did I know that I would fall in love with it.

As I wandered through the bustling streets of Bangkok, the scent of street food mingling with the hum of traffic, I realized that my camera had become my most trusted travel companion (Apart from my trusty life partner Shoval) Each click of the shutter captured not just an image, but a moment—a fragment of time that would otherwise slip away into the vast expanse of memory.

From the serene beaches of Koh Tao to the vibrant night markets of Taipei, my photographs told the story of my journey in a way words alone could never convey.

Photography while traveling became a way to document the extraordinary diversity of our world.

It allowed me to preserve the tranquil beauty of the countryside, the bustling energy of Chiang Mai’s festivals, and the breathtaking sunsets over the turquoise waters of Koh Pan Ngan.

Each photograph was a visual diary entry, a piece of a larger narrative that I could revisit and share with others.

“Photography is the story I fail to put into words. It captures the moments that words alone can’t express.”

Through the lens of my camera, I discovered that I saw the world with new eyes—more attentive to the details, more appreciative of the fleeting beauty in everyday scenes.

The act of photographing urged me to pause and truly immerse myself in my surroundings, to notice the play of light and shadow, the textures and colors, the expressions and gestures that make each place unique.

And so, each journey became a collection of stories, told through my photographs, reminding me and those I share them with of the vast, diverse, and beautiful world we live in.

Street photography allows me to capture the candid essence of everyday life, turning ordinary moments into compelling stories.

Taipei – MRT packed on rush hour

From the moment I landed in this vibrant city, Taipei beckoned as the perfect canvas for my first attempt at street photography.

But first thing is first – What is street photography?

By definition:

“Street photography, a genre of photography that records everyday life in a public place. The very publicness of the setting enables the photographer to take candid pictures of strangers, often without their knowledge. Street photographers do not necessarily have a social purpose in mind, but they prefer to isolate and capture moments which might otherwise go unnoticed.”

For me, it’s more than a technical definition. It’s about finding the needle in the haystack—a fleeting moment frozen in time, seemingly insignificant but filled with emotion and reflection of life’s simplicity.

“Street photography is the art of observation, anticipation and imagination, combined with the science of composition.” — Polly Rusyn

In the first few hours, I caught myself tinkering excessively with camera settings and exposures, rather than immersing myself in what truly mattered: the bustling people around me, their fleeting interactions, and the vibrant neon signs illuminating every corner. Simplifying my settings, I redirected my focus outward, towards the lively streets and bustling markets, aiming to capture the essence of Taipei’s dynamic atmosphere.

As I navigated through the maze of streets, Taipei revealed its multifaceted personality. From the modern Taipei 101 Skyscraper towering over historic temples, to the eclectic mix of street vendors selling steaming dumplings and exotic fruits at every corner. Stories unfolding in real-time— the crowded MRT full of people going to who knows where, the intense bargaining at a bustling night market stall, and the quiet phone call of a man on the outskirts of Ximending.

By shifting my gaze outward, I began to uncover moments waiting to be captured on Taipei’s bustling streets. Taking time to observe and immerse myself in the daily rhythms of life around me revealed beauty in the smallest details—the expressions of passersby lost in thought, and the subtle interactions between locals going about their day. These quiet observations not only enriched my photographic journey but also deepened my appreciation for the genuine moments that define the city’s vibrant character. It was through this lens that I witnessed how ordinary routines could shine with extraordinary charm and significance.

Here are a few tips I’ve picked up:

  1. Observation: Carry your camera and observe. There are countless moments waiting to be noticed. If something catches your eye, it may resonate with others.
  2. Confidence: It can feel daunting to photograph strangers, but a smile and a friendly greeting (like “Ni Hao” in my case) often elicit positive responses. Don’t hesitate to get closer for better results.
  3. Movement: Avoid staying in one spot too long. Explore different locations to find new perspectives and shots.
  4. Camera Settings: Simplify settings to focus more on your surroundings and less on technical adjustments.
  5. Quality and Quantity: Understand that only a small percentage of what you capture will be significant or usable. Embrace this reality as part of the creative process.

”Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.”

Confucius

In conclusion, my journey into street photography in Taipei has been nothing short of transformative. Beyond the technical aspects and definitions, it’s been about capturing the essence of everyday life. Taipei has taught me the art of observation, the courage to engage with strangers, and the patience to wait for the right moment. Each click of my camera has not only preserved memories but also deepened my connection to the world around me. As I continue to explore new streets and cities, I carry with me the invaluable lessons learned here, forever inspired by the beauty found in the ordinary and the extraordinary alike.
